All the way from Portland, Oregon, speaker and founder of Speak Out PDX, Lauren Wilson, will be joining us for a weekend of conversations surrounding mental health. We are hosting a  parent workshop and youth event, both of which are free and open to all.

On Saturday morning, March 18th, our Mind Matters Parent Workshop will be in Moore Hall from 9:00am-12:00pm. This workshop is also a great resource for adults who work with pre-teens and teenagers. The form to register is linked above. Everyone in attendance is encouraged to bring a journal and pen for note taking.

Sunday evening, March 19th, all 6th-12th graders in Mobile and surrounding areas are invited to our Mind Matters Youth Event from 5:00pm-7:00pm. We will be in Moore Hall with a reception in McGowin Hall to follow. Our time will open in worship before Lauren leads us in a message centered on Jesus, mental health, and the Church. The evening will wrap up with a reception in McGowin Hall with refreshments. Lauren will be available to meet and greet students. A table with Speak Out apparel, workbooks, and other resources will be available for purchase.

Speak Out PDX:Speak Out is a nonprofit located in Portland, Oregon. We are passionate about addressing mental health needs in the church. We believe Jesus teaches holistic health – physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.  We are therefore striving to equip the church with the tools necessary to address the needs of every church member. We do this by offering workshops to local churches; we are equipping staff, mentors, and parents with basic psychoeducation, practical tools, and warning signs of mental illness. We believe it is healthier to approach the topic of mental health in the local church with curiosity and humility, not fear. We believe the Father made us to be a family for a reason and that healing happens in community.

Biography of Lauren Wilson:Lauren Wilson holds a Bachelor of Arts in applied psychology & Biblical Studies. She has three years experience in a residential facility as a group counselor supervisor, ten years of experience in youth ministry, and is a master level coach. Her areas of expertise include crisis management, de-escalation, and grounding skills. Lauren is passionate about working with those in society who are marginalized and underserved, but her heart specifically lies in helping adolescents and families deconstruct unhealthy narratives and develop more empowering identities that lead to deeper connection and more secure bonds. Lauren has a passion to bridge the gap between the local church and mental health professionals. That passion led to the founding of Speak Out, a movement dedicated to providing practical tools to both churches and individuals to better meet the mental health needs of those in the church.
